Partners in Education Committee
The Partners in Education committee is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience and interests of children in the Milwaukee community by partnering Rotarians and their businesses with K-12 schools. We offer our partner schools the CHOICES program, speakers on careers, mentoring, off-site visits, summer camp opportunities and other activities. As a result of this experience, we seek to offer our fellow Rotarians insight about the educational issues and challenges of our city.
Partners in Educations Projects
Oliver Wendell Holmes
Recently, The Partners in Education committee has forged an rigorous partnership with the Oliver Wendell Holmes (OWH) School to build strong ties between OWH students and Rotarians. The committee has created an intensive mentoring program with the OWH students, funded field trips to the Children’s Health Education Center, supported a collaboration between the OWH and the Milwaukee Repertory Theater to offer an introduction to theater arts and provided scholarships for eight girls from OWH to participate in the CyberChallenge 2007, a six-day overnight adventure through the Girls Scouts in partnership with Alverno College.
Agape
Community Center
Partners in Education has subsidized children from Agape Community Center to the Milwaukee Sailing Center to learn all aspects of sailing and boat repair/making that translate into positive interpersonal relationships such as positive communication, self-esteem, discipline and team work.
CHOICES
Twice a year, Rotarians make CHOICES presentations in classrooms across the city to encourage students to make thoughtful decisions, underwritten by the Partners in Education committee.
Neighborhood House
Partners in Education has provided funding to support summer programs offered by Neighborhood House for central city children.
Salvation Army
Funded the Salvation Army’s Feed the Kids Program—a mobile distribution system to bring nutritious lunches to kids in the central city throughout the summer. The Salvation Army expects to hand out over 75,000 lunches this year. If you would like to participate in a distribution, call the Rotary Office.
Interact Club
We have begun the process of establishing an Interact Club at Washington High School. Working with students and faculty our committee members will support the first year activities by providing guidance, attending meetings and sponsoring Interact Club members at our weekly luncheons.
